What's your PC Build?

Post by Maypews »

Thread for talking about your PC build, planned upgrades or additions. My current specs are the following;

CPU: Intel i5 12600KF
GPU: AMD Radeon 6700 XT
RAM: 32 GB
PSU: Corsair M750X
Drives: 2 TB SSD, 5 TB HDD

My current machine is believe it or not the first actual gaming PC I've ever owned. Beforehand I was on an ancient FX processor with a GPU that was inferior to integrated, just couldn't run anything. But I was finally able to build my first real PC in 2024. Came at a very good time market-wise so I was able to get a lot of bang for my buck too.

I sort of constructed in a way where it could be easily upgraded by simply upgrading the GPU. Could've probably fit it on a 650W PSU for example but thought it'd be good longterm to go higher, same thing with the RAM. I've since learned that 32 GB of RAM is rather overkill for my usecase lol. Coming from my old computer I thought that I tried to run too much stuff at once but in actuality it was just the computer being incredibly slow and even now I rarely have more than 3 programs open at once.

I've also tried to console-ify my PC as much as possible. I have it connected to a proper TV via HDMI and also bought a wireless adapter for my Xbox controller. I further use a program called JoyXOff which binds my controller to work almost like it would on an actual console even when I'm not launched or in a game; like I can use the joystick as a mouse, type with an on-screen keyboard, etc. It then disables and switches over to controller support if I launch a fullscreen program. Guess I'm always a console gamer at heart even if I do have a nice PC rig now haha.

Would be interested to hear about all of your builds :TV:

It’s actually a very powerful machine that will remain relevant for years to come. You’ve really been lucky to get the most out of your money. Even if you think you have too much RAM right now, software may require more and more of it in the future.

I’ve never even heard about such unusual ways to turn a PC into a console. Probably because most of the people I know are hardcore PC enthusiasts. I’d be interested to hear more from you about your console-PC. What sort of obstacles do you encounter when using your PC in this way, for example?
:borgar:

As for my build, I use a laptop. Here are the specs:

Acer Predator Helios 300 (2020)
CPU: Intel i5 10300H
GPU: GTX 1650 TI
RAM: 16 GB
Drives: 476 GB SSD

I’ve been using it since 2020. The laptop is actually quite outdated now, but it still does the job for me, as I’m not really into AAA gaming. I’ve even undervolted it so it doesn’t overheat or make too much noise. At first glance, it might seem that the memory capacity is very small, but in reality my SSD is usually only about half full. I was initially quite sceptical about laptops, but now I realise that they’re actually useful, no worse than a desktop.

I’ve even been thinking about upgrading to a new machine around 2027/2028. But given today’s hardware prices and the fact that I’m a poor student, I don’t even know if I’ll be able to afford something new in 2030.

Nice rig, in the years before I built my computer and was browsing parts waiting for the supply shortages to end I was always looking at getting a 1660. Really solid piece of hardware for the price there. I'm something of a data hoarder and I really hope that the prices go down soon so that I can get more storage space for my system, that'll definitely be my next upgrade so to speak. They've shown some signs of it but the prices are still pretty crazy at the moment.

Yeah the setup gives me some headaches sometimes. I've streamlined it quite far at this point but the main one I'm having is that a Windows update randomly broke my monitor setup I had going before where I was extending one and using another as my main monitor.

So now the taskbar won't appear right on whatever monitor is set as my secondary monitor. But if I set my PC monitor as my main one all the stuff I want to open on the TV will open on the PC monitor instead. So I had to duplicate my screen which sucks a bit because I can't just have my PC and TV on at the same time. Here's hoping I find a way to fix it some day.

Honestly, I don’t expect computer component prices to drop any time soon. Big corporations won’t be able to fill their data centres’ needs soon. The slight drop in prices we’ve seen recently is most likely just the market reacting to the fact that regular users are not buying anything at the moment.

Does it annoy you too that we were promised Windows 11 would be highly customisable? “Everyone can tailor it to their needs!” But in reality, we can’t even change the damn colour of the Windows button. And every update breaks settings that weren’t supported by the system. I hope you’ll be able to sort out your monitor issue somehow.

Threaddus-resurrecticus!!

My intent here is definitely not to brag, but I've got a pretty sweet rig if I may say so myself. I was incredibly lucky in having bought everything before the various chip supply shortages, and I was pretty clever with how I managed to acquire everything.

CPU: Intel i9 9900KS
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
RAM: 32 GB
PSU: Corsair RM850x
Drives: 2x 2 TB SSDs, 1x 1 TB HDD

So, I sort of have a PC of Theseus going on here because here's how I was able to get all of this: I originally bought an Alienware pre-built back in 2019 during a really big sale Dell was having at the time. This allowed me to acquire a then-top-of-the-line CPU and some other components for comparatively, a really good price. I used this machine as it was for a while, but ultimately, Dells kinda suck and I ended up having a faulty motherboard that was causing system stutters during regular usage and gaming. After some hassles with support, I ended up replacing the motherboard, case, and case fans on my own, so I ended up putting my own build together from the components I had taken out of the pre-built. The GPU was added some time later on down the line after saving up to splurge on that.

For all the hassle that this was, it was significantly less expensive than buying individual components at end-user prices. Then, the chip shortages came right after all this, and now we've got the memory shortage these days, so yeah, I'm quite lucky. My philosophy on building computers is pretty much go big and then don't touch anything for like a decade.

Picrel from 2022. I've gained another monitor since then, and the desktop has become a next-to-desk because of how small my workspace is, but for the most part, the setup is the same as it was.

Small PSA: avoid Intel like the plague if you can, it's been the Boeing of CPU manufacturer for a long time already.

Be it the various anti-competitive jew-jitsu they've been convicted of (ICC's "GenuineIntel" check or laptop OEM rebates), the 13th/14th gen (https://www.radgametools.com/oodleintel.htm, https://trifectatech.org/blog/zlib-rs-in-firefox/) or C2000 Atom (https://www.servethehome.com/intel-atom ... bug-quiet/) physical break downs, the shitty non-solderer TIM, the "no ECC unless you buy Xeon", the much worse than AMD/Arm Spectre/Meltdown situation, etc... everything should make you steer clear of them.

What do you guys use all that horsepower for? I only ever seem to find myself using a fraction of my PC's specs. The rig is constructed in a way so that I can upgrade the GPU and have a decently stronger machine but at this rate I don't know if I ever will. The most demanding thing I ever do is emulate PS3 games. Wish I had all that storage space though, all my drives are red and it doesn't look like those prices are coming down any time soon. 7 TB is nowhere near enough for me, got really into datahoarding just in time for the AI craze...

Optimal quality conversion scripts for mangas to put on my e-reader (ImageMagick, libplacebo), sometimes video encoding (x265, ffmpeg, sometimes Vapoursynth) to upload on AnimeBytes, Gentoo (lol)... should be it? Gayming, I guess, though my current target is modded OpenMorrowind...

5 TB of HDD would really limit me, I agree. Gotta work more for that sweet money!

Yeah, it's kinda overkill a lot of the time, but in theory, it'll also last a long time. Gentoo, i.e compilation, is a reason unto itself. Gaming as well, but I don't have the time to play as much or get into as many games as I'd like. I used to be really into Sea of Thieves for some years, so that's where most of the horsepower was going into. Additionally, I work in software development, so being able to compile software quickly is pretty nice. The point is, there's always room for more in regards for gaming on this machine. The GPU is newer than the rest of the system. Most intense stuff I've done with it is probably VR stuff like Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx (love that game, made Covid a lot of fun). Just can't run my PC forever in the summer heat because I've got a small room and the thing just acts like a big space heater. :Sob:

5 TB + an external 1 TB is plenty for me. I'm definitely not a datahorder for large files, though I maintain a sizable archive of old digibutter.nerr stuff. Maybe you guys should make a thread on why you datahord. Like, I mostly stream anime unless I like it enough to merit saving it. For Steam games, I keep a lot installed, but I uninstall the ones I've completed. In general, I suppose I rely on datahorders like you guys when I come around to torrent something, though that's not all that often. I totally wholeheartedly agree with media preservation though. Again, I'd be interested to hear more on why you datahord.
