Rhythm Games

The forum for talking all about and playing video games. Here we study modern interactive culture to it's fullest extent, and perhaps engage in a few forum games of our own.

Rhythm Games

Post by aeon »

I've recently talked to a couple of people in Mchat, and realized a lot more people than I expected here play rhythm games, so I figured that it was about time to make a thread about it.

I wish for the thread to be a place where you can talk about any rhythm game you enjoy, discuss any favourite artists or songs you have, or even organize game nights whenever it's possible. I will make a longpost later detailing some of the rhythm games I've played and my thoughts on them, but firstly I'll leave some topics to stir up some conversation.
  • What's your favourite rhythm game(s)?
  • What's your history with rhythm games?
  • What are your favourite artists/tracks from rhythm games?
  • Is there any rhythm game you wish you could try out?
  • Do you keep up with any rhythm game players?
  • Do you keep up with any rhythm game content creators?
  • Would you be interested in a rhythm game night?

Big rhythm gaming fan here!

What's your favourite rhythm game(s)?

Osu! (mania and standard), Pump it Up (I've mostly played XX and Prime, only having been able to play Phoenix once. Almost all of the cabinets in my area were XX back when I played a lot), Guitar Hero/Clone Hero, and DDR occasionally when I could find a cabinet.

What's your history with rhythm games?

Guitar Hero was a staple game in my house growing up. It was the only game everyone in the family enjoyed playing, so we played it a lot. Having played through all of the GH games and many Rockband games when I was younger, I was always itching for more. I played all kinds of niche rhythm flash games, strange Korean rhythm MMOs, etc until I finally discovered Osu! in 2012. Osu! kind of absorbed my entire life for a few years. There was just so much high quality content in the game and a really fun community to boot. From there I got really into the community, even meeting up with some of the top players irl at anime cons and such. Most of my friends at that point in my life were from Osu! I started also branching out to other games and joining the online rhythm gaming community as a whole, nothing ever beat Osu! for me though. After leaving high school, I stopped interacting with rhythm games as much - I had to dedicate my time to work and such so I drifted away from the communities I so very much enjoyed being a part of. I got with my wife around that time as well. After a few years of being together we went on a small cheap vacation with my family, where we encountered a DDR cabinet in one of the lobbies. My wife and I hardly left that lobby for the entire vacation. Both of us were enthralled with the game and couldn't stop playing it. When we got home we searched for DDR cabinets in our area and there were none - but there were two PIU cabinets, which was a relatively similar game, so we decided to try it out. We fell in love with the game immediately and started making a habit of going out to the arcade and playing around twice a week. I started even going to the arcade every day after work so that I could get a little more practice in. I quickly became very close with my local PIU community and invested a lot of time and money into the game. We then started facing some economic issues and sadly couldn't justify playing any more as it was costing us quite a bit to keep that hobby, so we almost stopped playing entirely, only going once every couple months. Now, I still play Osu! from time to time, but I'm not as deep in rhythm gaming as I once was. I hope that one day I can own a PIU cabinet of my own so I can play it every day without worry.

What are your favourite artists/tracks from rhythm games?

Genuinely too many to say. I guess some standout artists are LeaF, M2U, xi, Zekk, Camellia, t+pazolite, O2i3, goreshit, IOSYS, Halozy, saradisk, Ta9-5, SMiLE.dk, Memme, SHK and I'm probably missing so many more. There are just too many good ones.

Is there any rhythm game you wish you could try out?

Almost every arcade rhythm game that isn't PIU or DDR, because that is all we have around here.

Do you keep up with any rhythm game players?

I have one friend I occasionally chat with who is a very high ranked Osu! player, but other than that, not so much anymore sadly.

Do you keep up with any rhythm game content creators?

Not at all, no.

Would you be interested in a rhythm game night?

Yes! Absolutely!

What's your favourite rhythm game(s)?

Etterna and Arcaea (though I suck at it). I plan on trying out Pump It Up LX Phoenix so who knows, it could become a favourite of mine.

What's your history with rhythm games?

I plan on making a longer post talking more about it but I pretty much started with Piano Tiles way back in 2015 when I was 8 years old. From then on, as a kid I ended up playing a little bit of everything, from roblox to Osu!. Nowadays I mainly play Etterna and Arcaea semi-consistently.

What are your favourite artists/tracks from rhythm games?

Like nyan said, there's just too many to talk about. I will mention here some of the ones I listen to the most: tn-shi, D-D-Dice, xi, Camellia, Nanahira, Laur, LeaF, Team Grimoire, Kobaryo, Silentroom, t+pazolite and much more. As for favourite tracks, I'd say: Synthesis, Halcyon, Testify, Infinite Strife, Hollow, Lament Rain, Aegleseeker and Grievous Lady.

Is there any rhythm game you wish you could try out?

Honestly any arcade rhythm game out there, never played any.

Do you keep up with any rhythm game players?

I used to watch a bunch of videos about cookiezi but nowadays I don't really care about that stuff.

Do you keep up with any rhythm game content creators?

I watched a couple of Losermanwins videos, he makes some fun stuff mainly focused on arcade rhythm games. I used to watch Etienne, but he has long retired to make running videos lol

Would you be interested in a rhythm game night?

Definetly. I think Osu! would be the best game for this even though I suck at it.
