Favorite Anime / VN OPs

Hither do the clergymen, physicians, and noble blood amongst us convene, to discourse upon Otaku matters not pertaining to SciADV, such as other visual novels, anime and manga.

Favorite Anime / VN OPs

Post by Erin »

Post some of your favorite anime / vn OPs. Here's some of mine, in no particular order:

NSFW:

Singer for the next should sound familiar. It's Ito Kanako. She does a lot of VN (including Sci;Adv of course) music. (This is a version edited without the character voicelines the regular version has in it. Also isn't the original's OP but the remake/remaster).

Propeller makes good OPs in general.

Another Propeller one (this one probably has spoilers for Bullet Butlers and probably Ayakashibito in it so beware. It's a crossover between both.):

A couple anime ones:

Crunchyroll vid cause I couldn't be bothered to find a better one:

These are just some that came to mind, got too many to list. :Tea:

First off, the obvious choice:

(Extra points to Kick Back for being one of the best electronic rock songs of all time)

(And double extra points to this one for being one of the best shoegaze songs of all time)

My favourite OP is Soul Eater's resonance. Soul Eater was the 3rd anime I ever watched about 14 years ago and it's OP remains on top in my eyes, shit is just perfect. Great show too!

Regarding Itou Kanako, I'd maybe put Find the Blue as my 2nd favourite OP. It's fantastic and I'm sure anyone here has heard it but posting it anyway. I also really like Hacking to the Gate and it'd likely crack my top 10. Higurashi's VN OP for chapter 2 done by her is also fantastic, love how Eastern it sounds. I'm not entirely sure where I'll put it cause I haven't heard it too much due to trying to avoid spoilers since I'm still reading it but likely quite high.

I love D. Grayman's first OP even though I'm not incredibly high on the show itself (still decent though)

One of my favourite shows and also favourite OPs, named my YouTube channel after this song.

Air Gear as a show just embodies the 00s in a way nothing else quite does, from the art to the music. Were it not so long I'd definitely suggest it for our Otaku Oratories, and I highly encourage anyone (especially if you're a Jet Set Radio fan with it's Naganuma-inspired OST) to watch it. It's OP sounds like Japanese Linkin Park.

Both of Muv Luv Alternative's OPs that I've seen are fantastic. I think I like the classic Asu e no Houkou a little bit more since it has more character and relevance to the story in it in my eyes in that it sounds like a war chant but I really enjoy the PS3 one too and think it deserves a lot more recognition. (videos may contain spoilers)

I love that Ashita no Joe's OP is an old-timey blues song a lot. Such a departure from most anime OPs with it's more classic instrumentation, but genuinely sounds very good too.

Lastly, for another nice and very Eastern OP, Basilisk's is a good choice. Very underrated show too!

I like this one, both the song and the visuals. Very cool! I'll try to give more of them a listen after while.

Man, so many of my favorites have been posted already but that's alright, there's plenty of peak out there.

I know the OP specified, well, OPs but Shiki no Uta will legit probably play through my mind as my life flashes before my eyes in my final moments on this Earth and for that reason I have to include it.

And who could forget, the otaku national anthem

Surprised no one has posted these one yet!

(Honestly any Monogatari OP works, but I am nothing if not a slave to Moe~)

Also, the original Eden of the East OP featured Oasis. They stripped this away on home release.

There were also a few I was not able to find on Youtube (or at least not in decent quality):

I was going to attach the Kujibiki Unbalance OPs as well, since I uploaded them as they were not available, however those got copyright blocked entirely. Waiting for dispute (maybe Kadokawa loves me enough to let it slide). Until then, uploaded on catbox (sorry to those who can't use catbox, i tried to upload them to my website but neocities said no).

It's hard to think of an OP for a show I like where I don't like the OP as well. But somehow the first few that come to mind aren't necessarily what I'd say are my favorite anime ever.

I've seen the OP to every season of Ranma 1/2 now and I definitely still like the first one the best:

The 1999 adaptation of Hunter X Hunter is great. The anime itself is superior to the 2011 one in several ways IMO (well, at least through the arcs it covers because I thought the Chimaera Ant arc was probably the highlight of the whole series). But the clearest place is stands out is its quality OPs. The 2011 ones are mostly generic shounen-core. This is nasty and angsty as fuck and I love it! It was one of my go-to songs at karaoke in Japan for a while because the tempo is slow and easy and the words aren't too hard:

The first series of Osomatsu-san was really amazing (no fujo). I thought it fell off in S2 but all the OPs were awesome. This is the best one though:

Do I even need to explain this one?

"I'M YOUR SLAVE!" Remember when anime was allowed to be cool because no one spoke English there?

Sure it's not the Hirasawa Susumu music but you know what? I like it in spite of the memes:

Speaking of Hirasawa, there's this. Can I confess a heresy? I've always thought this anime was overrated. Not bad, just didn't seem groundbreaking or amazing to me. But the OP itself is one of the all-time greatest, and not just because of Hirasawa:

For VNs, again I don't think there's one I like where I don't also like the OP, but this is probably the best one of all the ones I've played so far (yes, even Subarashiki Hibi):

Also, a special shout out to the ED of Scrapped Princess, a somewhat underrated fantasy series from 2003. The ED is by Oranges & Lemons, much more well-known for their iconic work on Azumanga Daiou. You can't mistake it for any other group:
