I almost never use the same username in more than one place and have always liked changing my handles on whims. Who I am as a person is in flux and being stuck with the same label in all places at all times goes against how I see myself. Something I appreciated about IRC is I could instantly change my handle as I felt like it; when I take extended breaks from communities like forums, sometimes I feel more comfortable returning with a new handle than picking up an old account who reflected the kind of person I was months or years ago vs the kind of person I am now. Japanese BBS are more accommodating to this kind of feeling ...
Seeing all the people here talking about names they've been using for years or decades is appreciable. There is some value in making a brand of your handle, so to speak; it can make it easier for old friends to find you and reconnect after time has passed!
An added benefit to using a multitude of names is that it makes it harder for bad actors to keep tabs on me.
This name "rancher" was picked because I was feeling like a cowboy when I stumbled across this forum.

I came up with my current username almost a decade ago, trying to replace [insert cringey old username here] with something halfway better. I had recently hacked my Wii and gotten whatever games/emulators I wanted to run on it, and had just finished Sin and Punishment on the N64 Virtual Console when the credits started with this:
GLASS SOLDIER.png (248.66 KiB) Viewed 563 times
The in-development name for one of my very favorite games became my own name. I usually just go by "glass" for short these days, though.
...Only problem is that when I'm in a call with someone and they say "glass" in any context my ears will perk up as if they said my name even though they didn't. Don't name yourself after an everyday object.
back when i was younger, my favorite band was the german rock band "subway to sally". Back then my favorite two albums of that band were "herzblut" and "nordnordost". in 2008 i signed up for their official fan forum/site and choose "herzblutnordnordost" as my username there. On that sites profile you could link your last.fm profile. it was the first time i ever heard of last.fm and i made an account there (also in 2008). "herzblutnordnordost" was too long for an username on last.fm and disallowed so i had to shorten it. "herzblutnordnord" sounded stupid so i ended up as "herzblutnord" on last.fm and been stuck mostly on that username everywhere since xD
How did you come up with your forum username, Labmems?
Heeh... its sadly a lot not as grandoise as it could be but here goes! My username is actually just a more "nameified" version of a username I've come to use a lot over the past few years, Uniano. I first came up with it when thinking of something catchy to use and it just stuck, I wasn't happy with the fairly innocuous names I had been using up until that point and wanted to have a unified name I could use anywhere. Uniano sounded nice to me, so it just stuck! Though the unified name thing kind of fell apart fairly quickly but that's neither here nor there... That's all for my end!
My username here : MetalHaruhi
The origin story is that I'm a big fan of Haruhi Suzumiya, and one day one of my friends taught me how to join a BBS using SyncTERM, I didn't want to use my actual name on there, so I combined his username MetalJack and my fav character Haruhi Suzumiya to make it "MetalHaruhi". On other places, my user is Daniele63, and that is based off my real name and some random number.

SyncTERM is awesome. Toyed around with it a little bit while I was hosting a private BBS. Good stuff.

Those secret messages
That spill into the air
From far away, so far away
A flowing river of illusion
Running with confusion
Never gone, it goes on and on.
My username comes from a German knight / mercenary.
Götz von Berlichingen (1480-1562) is most famous for his prosthetic right hand made of iron. Giving him the nickname "Götz of the Iron Hand". He wore two of them throughout his life. The second one he wore (the right one), was able to hold things unlike the first.
I came to find out about him from people talking about Berserk, comparing the similarities between Guts and Gotz. They're both hot headed, have similar names, both lost their arms, and both have a metal prosthetic hand. Kentaro Miura had commented on the matter and said that it's purely coincidence. And that he knew nothing of Gotz before making his magnum opus.
I thought it'd be a neat way of incorporating my love for Berserk into my profile without being too on the nose about it. :)
