Deluoode Movie Night/Afternoon/Brunch/etc.

Post by NonoEnjoyer »

I discussed this some time ago in mChat, but I'd like to have an event that's parallel to Otaku Oratory (someone can come up with a catchy name for this if the want) where we watch Western Films. It won't be on the same frequency as the OO as I would be hosting this and my freetime is more limited and I'm probably not gonna wanna do it every week. That being said, we should definitely try it at least once.

I'm free on Fridays and Saturdays, though Friday is preferred as Saturday I have church around 9-10PM UTC. Fridays I have nothing to do, so I'm open pretty much all of that day. I am still willing to do Saturdays though if it is preferred. We can't do it Halloween weekend as I'm busy that Friday and Maypews is doing a Saturday OO for Halloween.

Idk much of anything about gikopoi but I see no reason we couldn't just use that for the stream. Unlike OO, I want voice chat for this and so Steam Chat will be on tap once more. Not that you can't text chat if you want but I prefer to not have to type away when I'm watching something. If there's any complications with giko someone can let me know.

Depending on how long everyone remains interested, I figure we can at least watch 2 movies per session. Obviously if we're watching something like Seven Samurai or Godfather 2 (please no) then that's a bit different. Last time we discussed watching several different films. What I proposed -

Zulu - A fictionalized account of the battle of Rorke's drift, where a small group of mostly wounded british soldiers successfully defends their field hospital against an onslaught of thousands of Zulu warriors.

Gamer - A truly horrible, bizarre, mysterious film. I don't want to spoil anything about it. Needs to be seen to be believed. 2000s period piece in the worst way possible.

Best in Hell - A movie produced by Wagner Group giving a realistic depiction of a combined arms operation to capture an apartment block. The two sides in the movie are the "whites" (wagner/Russia) and "yellows" (Ukrainians). Despite what you might think the movie gives a very fair and honorable depiction to both sides. If you're interested in seeing a realistic depiction of the early days of the Ukrainain invasion, this is a good one.

A few other suggestions I have for movies that I love:

iRobot - my favorite movie of Will Smith's, at least as the lead. he plays a detective in 2035 chicago. Robots have become commonplace in human life, but Detective Spooner doesn't trust them. He investigates the murder of the lead designer at US robotics corporation, where he was purportedly murdered by a robot-- something that should be impossible with the 3 laws of robotics in effect. It's hardly shakespeare, but it's a 2000s frutiger aero futurism classic that I really love.

Heat - I know Gotz thinks this sucks, but I need to see for myself if the so-called Best Heist Movie of all time is actually bad. I've never seen it but it has a reputation that precedes itself.

I am of course open to other suggestions. The criteria for what I want is fairly loose. The main thing is: not anime. That's what OO is for. Even japanese films with real people are fine. I would prefer more movies featuring real human beans for now, but I'm not opposed to animated stuff if you think you have something good. Suggested movies don't have to be critically acclaimed or recent or anything like that. Feel free to recommend classics that you think everyone has seen, because I promise you I probably haven't seen them, or esoteric shit that you think is underappreciated.

Please provide a brief description of your movie if you don't mind, especially if it's more obscure.

ADDITIONALLY, if you're suggesting something really hard to find, it'd be appreciated if you could provide it to me via file upload or some other means, we can discuss this if necessary.

Only things I'm not allowing: shit that is basically straightup up pornography. Nudity or w/e is fine, but I don't want anything legit hardcore. Right now that's the only thing I can think of to disallow, but if a suggestion comes up that I find (sorry for saying this) problematic, I'll adjust this post.

We'll start with a poll for the day of our first meetup. I will set it so you can pick both options and we will decide whichever one is available for more people.

Please comment below if you are interested. If you are, but are on time constraints, give me a few figures for when you're available on either day and I'll have a poll up for the timeframe once the date one runs its course. Once we get the date and time done, there will be a poll for our second movie. I'm going to decree Zulu as our inaugural flick, but the 2nd spot is up for grabs.

All of this is subject to change and I've never done anything like this before so it might be a disaster. Fair warning!

Some suggestions:

Primer (2004) - Low-budget scifi thriller about time travel. I picked up on this one cause the plot was compared a lot to Steins;Gate.

Demolition Man (1995) - Never got to see this one.

Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) - I haven't seen this one, I read about it in a book or something.

Dr. Strangelove (1964) - A classic.

Gayniggers from Outer Space (1992) - Also a classic.

Takedown (2000) - Fictionalized account of the nortorious hacker Kevin Mitnick's shenanigans. Really dumb but in a fun way.

Mojave Phone Booth (2006) - Doc about an abandoned phone booth that garnered attention due to its strange location in the remote Mojave desert.

Wesley Willis: The Daddy of Rock 'n' Roll (2003) - Doc about the paranoid schizophrenic outsider artist Wesley Willis, known for hits such as Rock 'n' Roll McDonalds.

Cube (1997) - Ain't nothing scarier than being trapped in a cube.

Pi (1998) - A schizophrenic unemployed mathematician is approached by stock brokers and Hasidic Jews after discovering a strange and powerful number.

Giko already has audio streaming built in, you can just use another stream slot for voice. There's a few rooms with like 12 slots.

Here are some of movies I really enjoy. I could of added more but I think this is enough for now:

Bladerunner: The Final Cut / Bladerunner 2049: Follows the story of a law man / bounty hunter. Who is tasked with "retiring" biologically engineered humans called replicants that have become too independent. The line of what makes one human and one replicant is a extremely thin one. All within a bleak near future cyberpunk world.

Drive (2011): A lonesome get away driver struggles with a deep yearning for human connection. While also trying to hide and ignore his true nature. Very stylish crime drama.

Stalker (1979): A Russian film based on the book Roadside Picnic. Three men must journey into what is called The Zone. A massive area of land that has become uninhabitable due to "anomalies". These anomalies can range from mild headaches when stepping into a room. Or dying instantly if you light a cigarette at the wrong time of day. Somewhere inside The Zone however, is a room that will grant your deepest wish. Its a lengthy but incredible art house type film.

Hardboiled (1992): The John Woo, gun-fu classic. Follows a loose cannon cop set on taking the law into his owns hands. An absolute blast from start to finish with incredible gun battles.

Hot Fuzz (2007): A great comedy about a city cop that has been transferred to the boring countryside. Little does he know, something terrible is happening in this seemingly peaceful town.

Hardcore Henry (2015): A incredibly fun action movie that's filmed entirely in the first person. The whole thing plays out and feels like a video game in all of the right ways.

Escape from New York (1981): Snake Plisken, your average 80's badass is tasked to save the president of the United States. Bad news is, his plane crashed in New York City. Which has been turned into a massive prison that one is allowed to leave.

Excalibur (1979): A condensed retelling of Arthurian legend. This fantasy epic follows King Arthur from his conception all the up till his death. Amazing cinematography and costume design in this one.

Collateral (2004): A cold and highly professional hitman takes a taxi driver hostage. Using him as his chauffeur for the night. A stylish film with grounded feeling gun battles.

Airplane (1980): A comedic classic that will have you rolling on the floor. One of, if not my favorite comedy movies ever.

Mechanical Violator Hakaider (1995): An evil machine has arisen from its slumber. Bringing vengeance to a dead world of twisted morality. Its a visually amazing tokusatsu film with great action.

Gantz (2011): Two highschoolers are killed in a train accident. But a somehow still alive... Standing in a empty room with several others. An ominous black sphere rests sits in the middle of it. Its a live action adaptation of Gantz. Which changes the tone of the main character. But still keeps the intensity of the death game scenarios and soul of Gantz.

The Last Samurai (2003): Taking place in the 19th century. A civil war captain is hired by the US government to train the newly modernized and western styled Japanese army. Only one samurai clan remains in the country, and it will not bow to the new Japanese government. Soon this captain realizes whose side is truly worth fighting for.

The Nice Guys (2016): A great comedy that follows a pair of private investigators in the 1970s trying to find a missing person and investigate the death of a porn star.

They Live (1988): A man finds a pair of sunglasses that allows him to see hidden things around him. Subliminal messages everywhere, influencing the general public into mindless lives and consumerism. However, these messages aren't the only thing he can see. Some of the people he meets while wearing the glasses... are not human.

Scream (1996): A killer is on the loose in a peaceful town. Murdering highschoolers left and right. A group of friends have to piece together what they know to figure out who the killer is. Sounds incredibly stereotypical right? But its executed extremely well and offers a satisfying twist near the end.

Some great suggestions so far. I will co-sign Gamer (I saw this in the theater when it came out with some friends and my god I thought this was a fever dream we all invented), Colossus: The Forbin Project, Gayniggers From Outer Space, Stalker, Escape From New York, and They Live. Here are some others that I think Deluoode would appreciate. I could really list an infinite number of them, so I'll just limit it to 20 (10 Japanese, 10 non-Japanese) and try to focus on ones that I think are better for a "party" atmosphere, even though I'm certainly always up for watching something a little more srs in tone.

(Some of these are repeats from my CyTube thread... come join it too!)

JAPANESE:

Otaku: Children of the Virtual Empire (1994): A documentary from 1994 all about otaku! Tons of amazing interviews with otaku of various kinds (anime, manga, military, etc.) from the good old days. The most hilarious and amazing to me was an interview with a westerner who managed to live the dream even back then: living in Japan with the otaku. And what was his opinion? The same as ever: "I got here too late... it used to be better." I guess some things are part of the human condition! The only downside is that the interviews are dubbed instead of subtitled, but it's a small price to pay.

Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1988): Pounding, churning, industrial terror. A low budget movie about a guy who dies in a car crash and becomes possessed by iron and metal and starts turning into an iron monster that turns everything around him into industrial, metal as he falls in love with the ghost of the victim of a car crash. Has to be seen (and heard... amazing soundtrack) to be believed.

Electric Dragon 80,000V (2001): Kind of like Tetsuo for the 2000s. Less industrial, more RAWK. Kind of like a tokusatsu movie about two guys who yield electricity for power. More humorous and self-aware than Tetsuo, but also amazing.

The Rapeman (1993): IT'S TEH FUKKEN RAPEMAN!!! Live-action version of the OVA we all know and love. What's extra funny about this is that it's played WAY too seriously for what it is! A lot of it like a lightly comedic drama about political corruption... and then you suddenly remember that the movie is called fuckin RAPEMAN!!! But very good. And would you believe there's 8 FUCKING SEQUELS???

The Shadow Over Innsmouth (1992): WHAT'S UP, IT'S YA BOY HP BACK AT IT AGAIN WITH THE FISH PEOPLE. Adaptation of the Lovecraft story but set in a Japanese fishing village. They even went to the trouble of giving it the name 蔭洲升 (Insumasu!). Kinda cheesy effects at times, but that adds to the charm. Actually very serviceable made-for-TV horror with a great mood.

Branded to Kill (1967): Apparently so "nonsensical" that it got its director Suzuki Seijun fired from Nikkatsu, the studio that had been employing him, which resulted in a huge fight and legal dispute. It's about a contract killer who is recruited by a mysterious woman obsessed with death. Has a very counter-culture, anarchic, absurdist bent. Apparently a lot of the ideas in it were came up with on the spot. Extremely cool movie.

House (1977): Classic surreal, absurd horror-comedy about a bunch of cute high school girls who go into a haunted house and slowly get picked off and tormented in hilarious ways.

Marebito (2004): A freelance cameraman finds some underground world of strange creatures and finds a beautiful, but mysterious young woman. Crazy psychological horror. One of the best J-horrors I've seen.

Baptism of Blood (1996): Story about a freaky old woman and her offspring and the desire to stay young forever. Some great gore and spooky atmosphere. Another made-for-TV horror. Adapted from a story by Umezu Kazuo.

All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001): Great, moody drama about disaffected Japanese teens. Sounds like half of our favorite pieces of media, no?

NON-JAPANESE:

Death Warrior (1984): In short, it's an extremely low-budget and cheap Turkish martial arts movie. But the editing choices make this move from an average campy B-movie to an avant-garde, experimental masterpiece which reaches 2001: A Space Odyssey levels of abstraction. And it has ninjas and zombies and motorcycle chases. Trust me, it's hilarious and your jaw will drop from start to finish.

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991): The goriest and most hilarious Hong Kong action movie ever made. Adapted from a manga which is apparently much more serious in tone. It's about an inhumanly strong guy who is locked in a dystopian private prison and subject to tons of tortures, but overcomes them all with the power of amazing practical effects of heads exploding, eyes getting ripped out, arms breaking off, etc.

Alien Beasts (1991): A movie so inept that it verges on pure experimental genius. Director and actors seem to literally be mentally challenged. Tells some story about aliens invading the earth but I can barely follow it. Often quite hilarious, though some scenes drag on very long. Hypnotic.

Bad Ronald (1974): Made-for-TV thriller/psychological horror movie about a nerdy high school kid named Ronald who accidentally kills a girl and then hides in the walls of his house to avoid the police. Very weird and fascinating oddity. Equally endearing and cheesy or inexplicable in turn.

Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend (1992): I like the IMDb description for this one: "This is the story of Marcus Templeton, a lonely security guard who blows all of his life savings on prostitutes because he is a TOTAL LOSER!" It's accurate. This is a strange dark comedy (?) of sorts about a fat schlub who blows all his money on hookers and basically decides to go down a hedonism spiral. It's like people wanted to make the biggest loser character possible. If you want to watch a comedy with the atmosphere of the Ricardo Lopez suicide tapes, pick this.

Supervixens (1975): Made by Russ Meyer, the god of big tits in cinema. Best variety of lots of girls with huge tits in this one. Bursting with BIG action, BIG emotions, and BIG mounds of female flesh! Very goofy and over-the-top in a way that's hard to hate like any Meyer film.

Pulgasari (1985): A case where the story behind the movie is even more interesting than the film itself. This film was made in Best Korea and is a clear rip-off of the Godzilla/kaijuu craze. The funniest part? It was made by a KIDNAPPED SOUTH KOREAN DIRECTOR. Of course, teh monster is a symbol for capitalism!!!

Phase IV (1974): Extremely cool movie about a colony of ants that achieves a sudden, rapid evolution due to a cosmic ray event. Sounds like a cheesy sci-fi movie and it is on the surface, but it's actually a pretty thoughtful, sophisticated film. The ending is absolutely bonkers.

The Brood (1979): My favorite movie by Cronenberg. Absolutely chilling and bizarre.

Freddy Got Fingered (2001): I'm the backwards man, the backwards man, I'm the backwards man, the backwards man, I can walk backwards as fast as you can, I can walk backwards as fast as you can...
