Yeah I mean, there's a reason the 18+ rule is the lowest in the section it's in. I don't really care about it at all on a moral or ethical level, I can tell you firsthand that I saw far worse shit online when I was a teenager than this forum. It is there solely for legal liability reasons. Since IPs are now anonymised I'd have no way of knowing if he signed up under a different username now through a burner email or something.

I don't really give a shit either, and honestly even if it's public info the chance of repercussions are really small; this joint isn't worth going after. You have to look at it defensively though: it's the user in question's responsibility to be the cop informing on himself and as long as these draconian precedents exist and continue to get worse all that does is push liability onto the sysop-- I don't think that's fair, and especially since the TPTB have now made their vested interest in increasing surveillance and control excruciatingly clear under the guise of all this bullshit I think it'd be better if places like this exist as havens for smart youngins who want to escape all that. But you have to read the room and not act like a dumbshit and that's a really big ask for a lot of people.

Regarding the point about using age as a crutch, I see what you're saying but I think those people are generally a vocal terminally online minority. When you're younger, those 1-2 year gaps seem a lot bigger than they do once you turn into old farts like we are. Time begins to speed up once you reach your 20s, so I don't think it's odd for teenagers to share their ages given that.

I'm talking as a chopped unc but the way I saw it when I was a kid is being underage basically made you a second-class citizen on the web, and even if it were obvious you're a teenager you never said it outright-- it was a bit of a gentleman's agreement to let it slide as long as you kept your end up. But heh, in my case even when I voice chatted people tended to think I was much older than I really was.

My friend runs a small linux YT channel and he's had a ton of trouble with underage people showing up in his discord despite it forcing you to read and accept the rules when joining. Then they just drop it in the general chat like "oh I'm 16, can I not be here?"

Gentleman's agreement is a good way to put it. As long as you accept those rules and never mention it, it's not really the admin's problem. Unfortunately, some people cannot even do that.

The way I see it is that if you're able to consistently fool everyone into thinking you're 18+, you're probably mature enough to be in 18+ spaces anyway. I was one of these as an underage B& back in the day. It feels awkward and weird to be on the other end of it now though, even if I can tell that a lot of it is arbitrary.

Hey all, it's been a while since I've done one of these, so let's hope I remember all the key points in here. Call me Shadoo. I've gone by this username forever, and it's a reference to a secret optional boss from Super Paper Mario, one of my favorite games for a long time now.

What makes SciADV special to you and what's your favourite entry?

The SciADV series is the first VN series I've ever read to completion. Chaos;Head was my first ever VN, and now I've just finished Anonymous;Code just a couple days ago. Each VN was consistently just an amazing experience through and through. I love the humor, the immersion, the sci-fi chuunibyou, and most of all, I love the sense of continuity that connects the whole universe together. It's hard for me to rank which is my absolute favorite, but if I had to, it would probably be something like: C;C > S;G > C;H > A;C = O;N > R;N > R;ND.

What's are your favourite pieces of non-SciADV otaku media? (can be other visual novels, anime, manga, jrpgs, etc.)

I don't watch a ton of anime, but from what I have watched, the Monogatari series was my previous #1 before the S;G anime dethroned it. Other notable entries are The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Rozen Maiden, and Serial Experiments Lain. As far as vidya, some of my favorites in no particular order are Super Paper Mario (& TTYD), Sea of Thieves, Cave Story, Super Mario Sunshine, Chibi-Robo!, Mario Kart Wii, Spelunky, and Touhou. I suppose my favorite qualities in a game are unique gameplay and story.

How'd you find this forum?

Real funny story, actually. I just finished A;C a couple days ago, and when I did, I went to feature the Perfectionist Steam achievement on my Steam profile and noticed that my previously featured Steam group had finally been banned. It was a stupid group I featured just for laughs that was named something like "Download Minions Movie (2015) Free Torrent". I went to feature another group instead to fill the newfound void on my Steam profile, and in doing so, I stumbled upon a link to here in the SciADV Steam group. Is there a lesson to be learned from this? Feature stupid Steam groups on your profile, and fortune will await you or something...

What's your opinion on cyberspace as it is now?

I appreciate that you used the word "cyberspace" in particular because I just had a roommate who tried to convince me that no one really uses this word anymore and that it's lost it's sense of meaning in 2026, and we had a whole short little debate over this. To get to the point, I don't like it. I don't like modern social media. I didn't like Twitter/Xitter from the start. I think R*ddit used to be OK, but I don't like it anymore. I don't care for Discord, but I use it because all my friends do, my university relies on it, and IRC is dead and we have killed it. I am a fan of free software. I am not crazy enough to limit myself to it exclusively, but I try to use it whenever I can. I loathe bloated, JS-heavy websites. I have a neat little website myself. I've already taken the liberty of borrowing a few web buttons ;) . I tried running a blog for a while last year, and I still haven't decided whether or not I think blogs are neat or pretentious. Anyone have any opinions on this? Lastly, I frequent the forum digibutter.nerr. It's been around since 2007, and it was actually really popular in the early days, though it's been dead for years now. It started out as a Super Paper Mario fan forum which got free advertising from actually having part of the domain name referenced in the game. These days, it's open to any video games, tech, anime, and of course, digital butterflies. Feel free to check it out if you want. Our ethos is a shared love of going on message boards and complaining about games we've never played :P .

What are some of your foremost hobbies?

IRL: Skiing, biking, hiking, rowing, & travelling
My biggest obstacle for all of them is time! Maybe this is another reason why S;G resonates so much with me.

It’s not like I don’t love R;N as well, it just all comes down to the minutia, you know? Hmm, having slept on it, I realize I forgot to include S;G 0, so maybe I’ll update my ranking: C;C > S;G > C;H > A;C > R;N > O;N > S;G0 > R;ND. O;N got demoted a few, not because I don’t love the story, but because of the state the LNs and the VN were left in. I think the biggest reason why I have R;N so low is that Kaito is probably my least favorite protagonist. I get that they all have their own character flaws that they come to terms with throughout the stories, but the apathy he had towards robots in the beginning is probably what gets me the most. Kinda just left me wishing Akiho were the protag all along.
