I've been watching the Dies Irae anime, after having already read the VN (twice now) and its predecessor Paradise Lost, both of which take part in the same "universe". Despite loving the VNs, I'd only heard bad things about the anime, and unfortunately people were right. It's really just not good.

For those who don't know, the original VN for Dies Irae is roughly 70 hours long. They packed 70 hours of VN into 18 episodes, so what, 6 hours? In the original you have loads of time to get familiar with each member of the cast, their backstory, their abilities, relationships, etc. In the anime, you get so little time to learn anything about anyone that it's hard to care. Not to mention it was originally 4/4.5 routes, cut down to one in the anime. So you miss a lot of buildup or it gets insanely rushed.

In addition, the anime starts with scenes you don't even see till near the very end of the VN! Spoiling the answer to mysteries you've not even encountered yet... While in the VN the antagonists are for a long period of time very mysterious, the anime shows you so much about them right at the start before you even meet the protagonist that it is ridiculous. And even though it tells you this stuff, to someone who isn't familiar with the VN it would likely just be completely confusing.

And it jumps around jarringly sometimes that its so hard to keep track of what's going on unless you've already played the VN, it must be a terrible experience for people new to the series.

Additionally, in a series that largely centers around personal combat, they decided to add giant (as in like, 100+ stories tall or something) skeletons that some characters fight using, which was not in the VN at all.

I could keep going on, but instead, I'll talk about the upsides. For one, in the blu-ray version it has audio commentary by many members of the cast, which is quite cool. To hear them joking around and such. Secondly, I was totally surprised (in a good way) to see that it depicted a hugely important scene (for a moment), that had never been shown in any entry to my knowledge, just implied. It was super cool to see, as a Shinza series (the series name) fan. What it was, was (Pretty large Dies Irae, Paradise Lost, and a yet to be released Shinza entry spoiler):
Spoiler
Satanael's death at the hands of Mercurius.
I wasn't aware that was adapted at all, so it was awesome to see.

Other than that, another perk is the blu-ray version has some pretty good fanart interspersed between episodes that I'd never seen before.

I've got 3 episodes left. Overall, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but hardcore Shinza fans who'd already read PL and DI, and then I'd just recommend watching the commentary, and the scene I mentioned in the spoiler.

I just started watching Kimi to Idol Precure (2025). This season's theme is idols, obviously; a series first, although there have been idol precures before. It seems like a pretty traditional iteration of the franchise for now: a genki pink lead with a heart of gold and a pretty dumb, slightly manipulative (lol), fairy looking for girls to recruit on a mission to save a fallen magic kingdom. I watched all previous seasons, so I know what I'm talking about!

I had totally forgotten how happy Precure makes me, man. Just inject it directly into my veins. :TV:

While watching some modern yuri anime with another anime club, I decided to rewatch KareKano in parallel to refresh my memory about what I consider to be the golden standard for anime romance. And my God is it good! Gainax at its peak was truly something.

This show has been high up on my "to watch" list for a long time. The idea of Anno directing a romcom is very humourous to me, but I'm also really interested because he's quite talented at what he does. Looks very good from an outsider's perspective. Might give it a watch once I'm done with my current lineup of shows.

I've decided to take a bit of a break from all the visual novel binging and go back to watching anime since I haven't really been watching much outside of the OO streams. Picked up Kino's Journey and really enjoyed the first 2 episodes, I can immediately see why this is so highly regarded. As someone who likes reading about history seeing someone just travel the world and pick up on different cultures is an incredibly cool idea for a show, especially when devoid of moralfagging/judgement passing on the protagonist's part. I'm not sure what I'll watch after this, considering Off & Monster season (which I'll contribute a writeup about to the Monogatari thread for sure), the rest of the Ashita no Joe 1st season (I stopped where 2nd picks up) or Karekano.

Hell yeah, it's Kino time!

Glad to see you liked it. I've been recommending this series to you for a while, and seeing that you started it and like it makes me happy. If you want more, you can read the light novels. Just one thing. There is no Kino 2017.

You're talking about the 2003 version, right?

Of course, I generally avoid remakes when it comes to anime. Although the Spice and Wolf remake doesn't look half bad, Holo is very cute in that art style. Anyone here have opinions on that one? I've only seen the 1st episode of the original anime as of now.

Oh I had just assumed it was an anime original, it seems the LN has been running since 2000? Damn, must be a lot more then. I'll keep that in mind!
