Yeah a lot of mine is used to download anime, though I do like collecting games and various other kinds of things as well. My usecase is mainly just that I think it looks noticeably nicer, stream sites tend to have crap bitrates and ugly watermarks. Especially noticeable with older anime that frequently use dark colours like Initial D, all the pixelation I saw on my TV when I tried to watch that was kinda the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Also I can't exactly stream anime from my modded PS3, I have an afinity for watching retro shows in their proper 4:3 aspect ratio and it looks far nicer IMO.TheEvilShadoo wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2026 3:50 pmYeah, it's kinda overkill a lot of the time, but in theory, it'll also last a long time. Gentoo, i.e compilation, is a reason unto itself. Gaming as well, but I don't have the time to play as much or get into as many games as I'd like. I used to be really into Sea of Thieves for some years, so that's where most of the horsepower was going into. Additionally, I work in software development, so being able to compile software quickly is pretty nice. The point is, there's always room for more in regards for gaming on this machine. The GPU is newer than the rest of the system. Most intense stuff I've done with it is probably VR stuff like Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx (love that game, made Covid a lot of fun). Just can't run my PC forever in the summer heat because I've got a small room and the thing just acts like a big space heater.Maypews wrote: Thu Jul 02, 2026 12:47 pmWhat do you guys use all that horsepower for? I only ever seem to find myself using a fraction of my PC's specs. The rig is constructed in a way so that I can upgrade the GPU and have a decently stronger machine but at this rate I don't know if I ever will. The most demanding thing I ever do is emulate PS3 games. Wish I had all that storage space though, all my drives are red and it doesn't look like those prices are coming down any time soon. 7 TB is nowhere near enough for me, got really into datahoarding just in time for the AI craze...
5 TB + an external 1 TB is plenty for me. I'm definitely not a datahorder for large files, though I maintain a sizable archive of old digibutter.nerr stuff. Maybe you guys should make a thread on why you datahord. Like, I mostly stream anime unless I like it enough to merit saving it. For Steam games, I keep a lot installed, but I uninstall the ones I've completed. In general, I suppose I rely on datahorders like you guys when I come around to torrent something, though that's not all that often. I totally wholeheartedly agree with media preservation though. Again, I'd be interested to hear more on why you datahord.
Agreed about it theoretically lasting a long time, that's the main reason I spent as much as I did on mine also. But honestly I suppose I've learned that I'm far less in need of demanding hardware than most, don't really care about how it looks as long as it runs at a 1080 60 fps clip, but it is nice to know that I'm basically set for ages given how low my needs are haha. I have thought about making a thread for people to talk about their hoards, maybe soon. I also just enjoy resharing files I get with others, always loved getting little PMs on Soulseek and the like.
