Took me a hundred tries and various full changes but I'm finally satisfied with how I riced my desktop. I'm interested in seeing how other people here do so.

Wow that's killer! Loving that Lain look and the beat time clock is a great touch. I've pretty much settled on this as my desktop's look for now. The Arcueid widget is an old Rainmeter skin if anyone sees that and gets curious. Everything else is pretty much self-explanatory, just set up mine to look like Vista above all else.

Getting Linux to look retro was surprisingly unreasonably hard, worst part was Rainmeter not being supported and having to improvise a lot. Hell, mine is VERY inspired in a Windows desktop I saw on Reddit (the wallpaper's from there), I just applied quite a few changes so that it could work well and be presentable. Still very proud of it though.

Yeah that's something I've noticed about a lot of Linux rices that try to imitate old Windows; you can't really make it look pixel to pixel/1:1 or run legacy software like Rainmeter and Winamp. Of course it comes with the benefit of not being spied on which is huge but still, I find a lot of them do look a bit "off" so to speak. I think the creative liberties you took actually look really good though! What's the reason for having two taskbars? Out of all the aesthetic choices that is probably the one I find the most puzzling.

The "second taskbar" is actually part of the wallpaper. As for the two clocks, uhhh.....

It's a program called Winamp, looks amazing and has a massive amount of skins that you can customise it with. I'd recommend downloading either version 5.666 of the original program (not the latest version because it got bought out by a shady company and has cryptoscams in it now) or WACUP which is a maintained fork by one of the developers. I'd be interested to hear how alix got it working on Linux though, didn't know that was possible! :o

I use Audacious, which is basically a Linix fork of it that also supports skins.

By the way, I'm looking at my previous post and I have just realized that the lack of spacing between the images does make it seem like there are two equal taskbars. I guess I should change that...

Oh wow lol, yeah I thought that black line below the task bar was the image breaking so I thought there were two. You can add a bit of extra space between your attachments by pressing enter, like this.

Code: Select all

EDIT: Seems you beat my reply to it. But I'll leave it this post up anyway just in case anyone else encounters a similar issue.

A bit cluttered, but I use all the programs often enough to warrant their presence. Also based Coaltar of the Deepers pfp. :mahothonk:
