Deluoode: The Visual Novel

I am not opposed to the "coming out of her shell" plot thread that @Maypews is suggesting, but to my mind that feels a little similar to Chaos;Head. Obviously that is not the core message of what C;H is about but it's definitely still a major part of Takumi's development. Again, I'm not opposed to it (also don't think it's pretentious by any means) but I also wonder if there's not something more original that we can come up with.

Org-tan needs work as a character, I don't think there's much pinned down about her. Just wanted to make a note of that. Somehow I imagine her to be a pretty normal person despite her gyaru-esque appearance.

Other original characters: should Del-chan have a love interest? I'm not opposed to the idea. I think it could be fun to have a sort of foil/contrast character to Del-chan that's more in tune with the modern internet. Deluoode CIty (or w/e we call it) could in general be thought of as culturally "behind" in the wider world, but Del-chan would be seen as an extreme case with her netslang and so on. This hypothetical man (a potential man, if you will) could be the anchor that keeps del-chan from going too off the hikki deep end.

I like the idea of a Mr. Braun type character as @nyan said. I would want him to be distinct enough as to not be a ripoff of Mr. Braun though... first thing i'm thinking of is making him similar to Julius, Chris' dad from everybody hates chris. Extremely stingy but a real ass giga when the chips are down.

As for Del-chan's backstory... do we want her to have parents? If we wanted to be kinda comedic with it, you could have nyan and his wife be Del-chan's parents. If that's too much, i'm open to other suggestions.

Also, should Del-chan's name just be Del-chan? Obviously her name is that because she's Deluoode chan, but I was thinking maybe she could have a real name that she refuses to go by in front of most people, not so different from Hououin Kyouma. Org-tan could exclusively call her by her real name as a bit. It could be a name that lines up with her alias like Delilah or Delphine (not many choices here tbh), or something entirely unrelated.

And if she's going to be an @channeler, she has to be a namefag. She needs to go on a long rant about why namefagging is gay and why you shouldn't do it, but then explain that she has to do it because people HAVE to know when it's del-chan posting, and not some impostor.

Another bit could be her constantly invoking the committee/the organization when bad things befall her. Ex: "And the luser working the Chick-Shill-A counter fucked up my order... no doubt the committee's lining his pockets this very moment."

I've also thought about roles our board members could play in deluoode city. Tell me what you think:

Parzival - host of Deluoode's primary talk radio station, where he hosts an infowars esque show that keeps the plebeian masses up to date on the shadowy moves of the committee and its various tendrils.

Capstasher - Administrator of the deluoode public archive and museum, and a frequent call in on the parzival show.

alix - Deluoode city's emissary/chief diplomat, renowned for mastery of many languages and ability to make esoteric cold war history references (among others).

Steve - steve has to be an idol. I think that'd be awesome. and of course, he's an mmo slave when he's not doing cute idol things.

Blond - deluoode city's man of the arts, he can do it all! The modern da-vinci, except for his unfortunate penchant for moorish women...

Ptephine - Deluoode city chief of police. Very fond of public executions by hanging.

Gotz - commander in chief of the Delusionary Defense Forces. Ensures the militia's looks are just as lethal as their combat skillz.

Yuuni Anno - commander of the highly trained Delusionary Air Defense Forces. Also the only member of the delusionary air defense forces (he's working on that)

dokyun and theEvilShadoo - high-level cyber criminals recruited by mayor Maypews to both bolster Deluoode's digital defenses, and also antagonize the piss out of neighboring forum city states.

cidoku - deluoode city's homegrown mahjong world champion.

rancher - supreme leader of the nearby commune of Gikopoi, an honorary citizen of Deluoode city who also runs the board game club.

aWhiteScreen - official social media manager for Deluoode government accounts. currently has the mayor's official account banned from Quitter - The Nothing App for saying the N-word

Myself - Minister of Propaganda... or Chief of the department of tourism, depending on who's asking.

Note that not all of us have to make an appearance, this was just me brainstorming ideas. It could even just be mentioned in passing. "Oh, another televised execution this week... old Teflon Ptephine's at it again..." kind of thing. And if you have better ideas for yours or others' role in the great Metropolis of Deluoode city, have at it.

I love the fact that my first idea for locating Deluoode City was in Chicago or Atlanta, and now we have Julius and Del is called Delilah XDDDDDDD. I like the idea of having our version of Braun. Personally, I think he should be a blend of Chris's dad and Chef from South Park. Bonus points if he loves soul music and the soul king himself:

I don't know if he should be a regular dude who's renting or the owner of a niche shop, but the idea of him wearing bootleg nekketsu clothes is really funny and very fitting.
Also, Del is the name she introduces herself by to everyone, and she uses another name as her nickname. I was thinking "Bluepantsuknight" with a million X's to make it accurate to the time period.
For her cool, tragic backstory, I was thinking that she makes things up on the spot, borrowing ideas from other mangas, and it turns out that she ironically has a good relationship with her parents. She's just in that dumb teenage phase where she hates her folks.

I had an epiphany just now. The thing about characters like Frau and Del-Chan is that chicks like this don’t really exist on their own. Some do but they’re mostly doing it for attention from lusers, or are influenced by their boyfriends or things like that. A true Frau or del Chan is exceedingly rare. So how could a girl like del-Chan believably exist?

Bear with me, and don’t jump to conclusions! I think we should establish that Del-Chan has an older brother that she really looks up to, who indoctrinated her into otakudom from a young age and taught her their sacred arts. Del-Chan would not have many friends as a child and so this relationship with her brother would be very dear to her (nothing weird I promise.)

However, at some point in years past Del-chan’s brother vanished. She always had the idea that he was involved with bad business, but it was something he kept a secret and took with him in vanishing. This loss has a profound effect on Del-Chan and kind of crystallizes her into the person she is now. A very passionate and opinionated otaku who struggles in the real world but does very well online. She considers it paramount to keep the spirit of her big brother alive, and could use an online handle derivative of his.

Finding out what happened to him could be del-chan’s mission. As it’s been years since he went missing, del-Chan has friction with her parents as they’ve largely given up on finding out what happened to him. She of course refuses to move on.

This would be kept a secret from basically everyone, and not something she tells the reader for some time. You could have a scene where she gets seriously emotional because someone knocks one of her bro’s favorite anime online, way more than normal even for her. Then she can’t help but talk about it.

Wow, we just might be able to actually get a plot together. Lmk what you think

Org-tan works for the powers that be in Deluoode city. In the course of following a lead on her brother, del-Chan runs into org tan but it’s completely by accident. Then later on in the story org-tan starts showing Jo around del-Chan all the time, sometimes in a disguise and sometimes not. Del-Chan notices and becomes increasingly paranoid and starts to think that someone really is pursuing her.

Org-tan would’ve been assigned to keep an eye on del-Chan as The Forum (the name of our epic shadow government, subject to change) has taken notice of her activities and fears she may fall into the hands of enemy agents from the committee (alternative name lending) who have infiltrated deluoode city.

This would culminate in del-Chan fleeing org-tan in a big chase, with her running into some friendly police officers that promise to protect her. But they’re actually committee men! And so del-Chan gets abducted and has to be rescued by org-tan. Following that, del-Chan is introduced to The Forum, and is surprised to see so many familiar faces among its members. In true anime fashion, the forum brings aboard a moe anime girl with no particularly outstanding skills aside from being a keyboard warrior. This is how org-tan and del-Chan become friends and partners (police way not gay way, unless…).

This is how org-tan and del-Chan become friends and partners (police way not gay way, unless…).

This is just a vague outline. Doesn’t have to be as hammy as this but this is what I have for now. Lmk what you think

I am not opposed to the "coming out of her shell" plot thread that @Maypews is suggesting, but to my mind that feels a little similar to Chaos;Head. Obviously that is not the core message of what C;H is about but it's definitely still a major part of Takumi's development. Again, I'm not opposed to it (also don't think it's pretentious by any means) but I also wonder if there's not something more original that we can come up with.

Org-tan needs work as a character, I don't think there's much pinned down about her. Just wanted to make a note of that. Somehow I imagine her to be a pretty normal person despite her gyaru-esque appearance.

Other original characters: should Del-chan have a love interest? I'm not opposed to the idea. I think it could be fun to have a sort of foil/contrast character to Del-chan that's more in tune with the modern internet. Deluoode CIty (or w/e we call it) could in general be thought of as culturally "behind" in the wider world, but Del-chan would be seen as an extreme case with her netslang and so on. This hypothetical man (a potential man, if you will) could be the anchor that keeps del-chan from going too off the hikki deep end.

I like the idea of a Mr. Braun type character as @nyan said. I would want him to be distinct enough as to not be a ripoff of Mr. Braun though... first thing i'm thinking of is making him similar to Julius, Chris' dad from everybody hates chris. Extremely stingy but a real ass giga when the chips are down.

As for Del-chan's backstory... do we want her to have parents? If we wanted to be kinda comedic with it, you could have nyan and his wife be Del-chan's parents. If that's too much, i'm open to other suggestions.

Also, should Del-chan's name just be Del-chan? Obviously her name is that because she's Deluoode chan, but I was thinking maybe she could have a real name that she refuses to go by in front of most people, not so different from Hououin Kyouma. Org-tan could exclusively call her by her real name as a bit. It could be a name that lines up with her alias like Delilah or Delphine (not many choices here tbh), or something entirely unrelated.

And if she's going to be an @channeler, she has to be a namefag. She needs to go on a long rant about why namefagging is gay and why you shouldn't do it, but then explain that she has to do it because people HAVE to know when it's del-chan posting, and not some impostor.

Another bit could be her constantly invoking the committee/the organization when bad things befall her. Ex: "And the luser working the Chick-Shill-A counter fucked up my order... no doubt the committee's lining his pockets this very moment."

I've also thought about roles our board members could play in deluoode city. Tell me what you think:

Aeon - pawn broker/fence who people go to because of his inventory of items you can't get anywhere else, despite their exorbitant prices. Also in the information business.

Parzival - host of Deluoode's primary talk radio station, where he hosts an infowars esque show that keeps the plebeian masses up to date on the shadowy moves of the committee and its various tendrils.

Capstasher - Administrator of the deluoode public archive and museum, and a frequent call in on the parzival show.

alix - Deluoode city's emissary/chief diplomat, renowned for mastery of many languages and ability to make esoteric cold war history references (among others).

Steve - steve has to be an idol. I think that'd be awesome. and of course, he's an mmo slave when he's not doing cute idol things.

Blond - deluoode city's man of the arts, he can do it all! The modern da-vinci, except for his unfortunate penchant for moorish women...

dokyun and theEvilShadoo - high-level cyber criminals recruited by mayor Maypews to both bolster Deluoode's digital defenses, and also antagonize the piss out of neighboring forum city states.

cidoku - deluoode city's homegrown mahjong world champion.

rancher - supreme leader of the nearby commune of Gikopoi, an honorary citizen of Deluoode city who also runs the board game club.

aWhiteScreen - official social media manager for Deluoode government accounts. currently has the mayor's official account banned from Quitter - The Nothing App for saying the N-word

Myself - Minister of Propaganda... or Chief of the department of tourism, depending on who's asking.

Note that not all of us have to make an appearance, this was just me brainstorming ideas. It could even just be mentioned in passing. "Oh, another televised execution this week... old Teflon Ptephine's at it again..." kind of thing. And if you have better ideas for yours or others' role in the great Metropolis of Deluoode city, have at it.

I'm not sure about there being a love interest - I kind of just picture her being a fujoshi about other people and not being super into things herself - unless it is her "proving" that she is very knowledgeable about sex and relationships (which she is not).

I like the idea of making our Mr.Braun-like figure a stingy guy who is willing to contribute (very reluctantly) when it really matters.

I'm open to being Del's parent if everyone else is chill with that lmao.

Some do but they’re mostly doing it for attention from lusers, or are influenced by their boyfriends or things like that. A true Frau or del Chan is exceedingly rare. So how could a girl like del-Chan believably exist?

Bear with me, and don’t jump to conclusions! I think we should establish that Del-Chan has an older brother that she really looks up to, who indoctrinated her into otakudom from a young age and taught her their sacred arts. Del-Chan would not have many friends as a child and so this relationship with her brother would be very dear to her (nothing weird I promise.)

However, at some point in years past Del-chan’s brother vanished. She always had the idea that he was involved with bad business, but it was something he kept a secret and took with him in vanishing. This loss has a profound effect on Del-Chan and kind of crystallizes her into the person she is now. A very passionate and opinionated otaku who struggles in the real world but does very well online. She considers it paramount to keep the spirit of her big brother alive, and could use an online handle derivative of his.

Finding out what happened to him could be del-chan’s mission. As it’s been years since he went missing, del-Chan has friction with her parents as they’ve largely given up on finding out what happened to him. She of course refuses to move on.

This would be kept a secret from basically everyone, and not something she tells the reader for some time. You could have a scene where she gets seriously emotional because someone knocks one of her bro’s favorite anime online, way more than normal even for her. Then she can’t help but talk about it.

She leaves home and begins living in "the base" out of frustration with her parents for giving up. Maybe throughout the story there could be various pieces of evidence that he has been around or where he might be that occasionally show up that could help move the story along. Del-chan never outright says why she is doing these things to chase after him though and always makes up grandiose fictions about why she has to investigate x or follow through with y. Something interesting that we could do is make some of these fictions unexpectedly actually end up being true to some degree.

The only romantic interest I can see Del having is that she loves the VA's of her otome characters and a guy who looks like one of them. Sort of like Nago from Neo TWEWY.
I don't mind you being Del-chan's pops, and I really like that you proposed Onizuka as her aniki. It's very close to what I had in mind, and the best teacher in Japan is an Eva fan.
After doing a bit of research, I'm going for the PP-19 Bizon. That thing packs decent heat. As for whether Org has a body count, that's up to you guys. I personally love a woman who can kick my ass.

I added some new features to the VN engine! There is now a pause screen, a settings screen, localization, and multiple save slots available!



Currently the settings that can be changed are just master volume, screen mode (fullscreen, windowed), and language.



I set up localization so that to make a translation we would just need to make a duplicate scene file with a language prefix including all of the translations. For example, eng_example.scene will load when you have English selected and jpn_example.scene will load when you have Japanese selected.

I added something interesting for save slots where instead of a still of the scene displayed on save slots like most VNs do, I made it so little 32x32px icons show up with who was in the scene when it was saved. This is because we just don't have the screen real estate to display multiple stills with the target resolution. So for example, if Del-chan was present, a little Del-chan icon pops up! Save slots also show some other information too. Check it out:



I'm not the best pixel artist (or artist in general), so if anyone wants to take the lead on making these little icons, feel free to! Here is the one I made for an example:



I also plan on making this image the application icon, unless someone comes up with a better one!
