How did you come up with your forum username, Labmems? Does it have a long history or did you accidentally click register after letting your pet iguana use your keyboard? Tell us all about it. Exaggerate, if you must.

:ThanksFaris:

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was just a wee lad. I wanted to download some ROMs and the only place I found for the one I wanted was a forum, like this one. I needed to register, but had no name, as it was stolen by a fairy the night before. I looked at the front page for ideas, and in my young innocent mind, all the users had names that looked japanese. And, so, I made up a word that looked japanese as well. It has stuck with me ever since. The fairy never returned.

Love me a good username story. By the way, is yours pronounced with a soft C (sid) or a hard one (kid)? Anyway, my username, which is now over a decade old ( :Sob: ) comes from an American football game I used to play a lot. Basically on the game I played a position where you had to deal with lots of running plays going to your side and so you had to shed off the blocker and tackle the ball carrier before they could get a lot of yards. I became very adept at this and started being nicknamed "Mayweather" after the boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr because I would figuratively knock people out on tackles. Been using some variation of it ever since.

How did you come up with your forum username, Labmems?
I’ve said it a few times now, but I’m from Spain. Here, it’s not very common to see someone with blond hair, so people who didn’t know my name call me “El rubio,” and my friends, as well as my family members, gave me the nickname of “Rubio.” My favorite YouTuber when I was a kid just happened to be called “elrubius,” so after years of using my full name in all caps in the neet like a boss, I decided to change it to the original “elrubio.”

Years later, when I learned English, I translated my nickname as well, writing it properly as “The Blond.” And that’s pretty much it. I doubt that I’ll change it again because it’s very memorable, and I think I really hit the nail on the head with it.

As a small note, I kind of created a Mandela effect of sorts. Since my profile picture on Discord is a fan art of Joe Yabuki, a lot of people, after seeing my pfp for years, get surprised when they watch Ashita No Joe and realize that Joe was never blond. XDDDD

Very cool username stories so far from everyone! It is always fun to hear the very different origins of people's usernames!

For me, I had gone through dozens of usernames throughout my childhood but never landed on one I particularly liked until this one. Roughly 13 years ago, I had been banned from a competitive online game for being a supa hacka (yes, I know, shame on me; I was a child and I have reformed since this incident). Due to this, I had to make a new account for that game. I chose a username that started with "Nyan", because I wanted it to sound cute, and what is cuter than what catgirls say? In the couple years after choosing that username, I had actually created and grew a fairly popular online community for that game where everyone just always referred to me as "Nyan" as a shortened version of that username (even if they knew me irl). Because that is the name that so many of my online friends knew me by at that point, I just started using either "Nyan" or "_Nyan_" everywhere from that point on. I don't really care how you pronounce it - it was originally meant to be a soft "nyan" like a catgirl as aforementioned, but many people also say "nayon" or "neeyan" which I am also perfectly okay with! I think the thing that has surprised me the most about this username is just how often it is available; It seems like something that would be sniped pretty often, but I very rarely have to make a variation.

So far, all the stories are very intriguing and captivating. I always find it fascinating to listen to other people's stories about how they came up with their online nicknames.

As for me, when I was around 9 or 10 years old, I saw a video on YouTube where a guy in World of Tanks was signed as Dehander. I believe he was german. To my childish mind, it sounded incredibly powerful, and I started using this nickname myself, only adding the numbers 28 (which doesn't really symbolise anything).

A few years later, when I was playing an online game with my friends, we used online chat. Our nicknames were relatively long, so we decided to shorten them for simplicity, which is how my friends started calling me deha. It was then that I realised that I was actually using someone else's nickname and would be better off changing it. I liked it so much that after that, I always started signing myself as deha28.

By the way, a few years ago, I noticed that many users on Steam were also named deha. As it turned out, deha means genius in Turkish (it's quite arrogant to call myself a genius). This word was not as unique as I thought.

Everyone so far has had wonderful stories of how they got their user name. I'm afraid that chain must stop with me. You see, fellow labmems, my handle of "capstasher" comes from the fact i "stash" (i.e. collect) "caps" (i.e. bottle caps). Specifically the metal ones. There wasn't much thought behind it beyond that being my main hobby at the time.
The more interesting story is that of the full handle, Captain Saint Asher. You see, one day while watching famous streamer and computer aficionado LCOLONQ, he spotted me in the chat, and I suppose due to my being a new chatter he found my name to be novel, so made up a story himself as to what it might mean. He landed on Captain Saint Asher (Cap.St.Asher), and I've been using that ever since. Sometimes I would add Lord before it, as I received one of those Scottish lordship deeds ages back as a gift.
I seek to collect a large number of titles, which I will affix to my username as time goes on (Sealand titles, I am coming for you).

It's just my IRL name with quite a few changes, nothing more. I was never good at making usernames myself.

Nice stories, everyone! The lore of names is a fascinating subject, and since usernames are names we choose for ourselves, they can become quite personal. Sometimes I feel like people call me "cid"/"cidoku" more often than by my actual real name, so in a way it's become more of a real name than my real name...

Yeah soft c all the way. A hard c would make me look pretty dumb and my mom said I was smart. If you ever feel old, please consider that my name turns twenty (20) this year. Owari da... :OsakaHeadache:

This also happened to me. The username I hold so dear happens to be some sort of name or common word in either turkish or indonesian, and every once in a while I find a crypto scammer or two daring to be called with a variation of my name!

I swear I'll get myself a Count of Sealand title someday, and I'll never recover financially from it. Maybe when the Organization stops messing with my income... (So? Where's that cap stash? :mahothonk: )

Tried to find a name I didn't use elsewhere; Dr. Schnautz is mainly because I've been said to have a big nose ("Schnauze" in German means "snout", "schnozz" in English comes from it). I've used Blauheim as well (and still use it), another German-based name. I liked place-names that end with "heim" ("home" in German and other Germanic languages), like Mannheim, Trondheim, in English the corresponding suffix is "ham" so Buckingham, Birmingham, etc. Also because there was this hentai artist called Saikyou Anaheim who drew a lot of Castlevania and Megaman hentai. I was like 12 and thought the name was really cool. "Blau" because blue's my favorite color. Very versatile name that can be translated across domains; in Old Norse it's Blarheimr, a name I also use, in Old English it's Blawham, Blewahaimaz in Proto-Germanic I guess, fun stuff like that.
