CONSOLE WARZ - Xbox 360 vs Wii vs Playstation 3

Been thinking we need some more old vintage topics on this place and I can't think of a better candidate than this. The generation 7 of consoles was, in my opinion, the last time a whole generation had unique character amongst each system before the 8th generation came around and consoles just became watered down PCs with almost no differential between one another. The systems were also all relatively close in sales figures and in general this was a very hotly debated topic on the internet of yore.

So which do you think is the best? I'll go over some of the pros and cons of each.

Xbox 360

POSITIVES
+Unmoderated voice chat features that lended itself to a multiplayer experience that hasn't been replicated before or since

+Better and more stable online servers/general social features

+Best performance for multiplats

+God tier controller

+Solid lineup of exclusives

+Blades interface

+Underrated lineup of Japanese games

+Partial backwards compatibility with the Xbox

NEGATIVES
--Red Ring of Death (counts for 2)

-Normalised paid online

-Suffered from the Gun&Ball gamer demographic

-Dashboard interface got progressively worse throughout it's lifespan

-Pushed Kinect too much and general library stagnation later in the generation thanks to Don Mattrick taking over

Nintendo Wii

POSITIVES
+Nintendo first party games

+Insane modding scene, one of the most moddable consoles ever made

+Offered a plethora of control options outside of the Wiimote despite it's aggressive marketing

+Full backwards compatibility with the Gamecube

+Definitely the best lineup for co-op couch play

+Virtual Console was an interesting innovation at the time

+DAT INTERFACE

+Cheaper price

NEGATIVES
-Very high quantities of shovelware

-Noticeably worse specs than the other two machines

-Many games shoehorned motion controls in where it really wasn't necessary

-Wiimote gimmick wears off quickly

-Though the third party support is sometimes underappreciated, it pales in comparison to it's competitors

Playstation 3

POSITIVES
+Great dashboard

+Good library of exclusive titles especially of JRPGs and other Japanese-developed third party games

+Very customisable, supports direct input so you can just plug in any controller and also has lots of built-in functionality that the other two don't

+THE POWER OF THE CELL

+Has CFW and a strong modding scene

+Free online servers alongside solid social features

+BluRay player functionality and generally excels as a sort of home media center

NEGATIVES
-NO GAEMS (at launch, well besides Talladega Nights)

-Awful controller

-Yellow Light of Death

-Only had PS1 backwards compatibility excluding earlier models (which suffer hardware defects)

-Ridiculously overpriced (at launch)

-Worse multiplat performance than the Xbox 360

I’ve never owned a gaystation, but I have (and still do own) a Wii and a gecsbox 360. My aunt and uncle had a ps3 that I played when I was over there, but there selection was hardly exciting. Played mostly battlefield 3 campaign.

I honestly always liked the Wii motion controls. Shoehorning aside, I think it speaks volumes how badly attempts to duct tape motion controls to the rival systems failed. PlayStation move is often forgotten, but everyone remembers how bad Kinect was. Literally no games worth playing.

I didn’t have a 360 til the end of its life so I dodged the red ring. And re: gun and ball gamers, it’s kind of an ouroborous situation. The games kept getting made and people kept playing them. Military shooters were like crack in those days especially.

I love the Wii but I have little attachment to Nintendo first party titles outside of mii games. Likewise, I wasn’t big into halo even if I did like it. Xbox dashboard is probably undefeated though. So much sauce.

Also always been an Xbox controller fag. Analog sticks shouldn’t be adjacent. Please do @ me.

Wii hardware was crap though. It’s pretty miraculous that it didn’t hamper the console at all. Honestly, it’s hard to say because I really like the Wii and the 360. Not sure which I would pick to be stuck with for the rest of my life.

PS3 is by far the worst imo. Literally no games. PS4 has one game (blood borne) and the ps5 has no games still. I don’t have it on hand but someone post the mifflin Devin quote. Eternally relevant.

Order of the title is probably the closest I can get to a definitive answer as well, although, not to be that guy, but the Wii doesn't really... count? The Wii was an entertainment system meant to be usable in any sort of environment, by any sort of user. It had a big focus on getting people to move IRL which made it feel less like a console and more like gym equipment. That being said, there are multiple areas where the Wii absolutely raped the competition, main one being motion controls. Everyone tried to do it, but the WiiMote demolished the Kinect and whatever it is the PS3's version was called. Also as always first party titles make any Nintendo console worth buying.
The PS3 also had appealing features. Out of the box BluRay support? Backwards compatibility with the first two Playstations? Incredible stuff! However that price tag ruined it all. Never underestimate how much the initial release price can impact a console.
But enough about neat features, what is the best Gaming Console of the era? The Xbox 360. The most solid game library of its generation. Plays well, incredible controller (one of if not the best), plenty of storage and easily expandable, good online, good UI, decent backwards compatibility, and a really solid price tag. And it has Halo. People to this day are nostalgic for Xbox 360 online play sessions, the trash talk, it DEFINED the generation. It was the image of gamers for the longest time. The Xbox 360 rules! FOREVER!

Back then I was jealous of some of my friends who'd talk about their PSN and Xbox network, only ever having Nintendo stuff.
But when I got the chance to actually get a PS3 it was a lot less exciting than I thought. Not to mention Nintendo got branded as the kiddies games console back then even though you could do games like COD for free online on Wii with pretty much the exact same graphics.
Companies always ferch up on the 3rd console. PS3 Sony thought they had won so they deliberately made it harder to program games to work uniquely for their console, so it just turned into a trashy big whale of a console.

I have a copy of Lost Odyssey but I've still never actually owned an Xbox of any kind lol

Wii > Xbox 360 > PS3.

The PS3 got no games, and the controller sucks. WTF is a □ △ O X ? Why TF are the sticks adjacent? Who thought that shit was comfortable? Gaystation peaked with the PS2. It's absolutely a meme unless maybe if you live in Japan. Even still, the 360 and Wii put it to shame. Also holy shit the thing was expensive launching at $499 back in the day. The Miflin Devin quote has of course already been posted.

Despite my hatred of Microsoft, I actually like the 360. I never owned one myself, but that didn't matter because I had friends who did. The controller ranks in my top three. It had Halo, CoD, Castle Crashers, BattleBlock Theater, backwards compatibility, and the online play voice chat was legendary. It launched at a pretty solid price too, $299 or $399 depending on the model. Now for all its pros, it also had its fair share of cons. Red ring of death, large library, but also a lot of slop-shooters and sportsball gaymes, Kinect, and the UI only got worse over time. The biggest sin of all though was the paid subscription online service. Ho...ly...shit... just an absolute fucking moneygrab. While technically this was a thing since the original Xbox, the 360 certainly played its part in making it hard to live without. Honorable mention: This console really had a good price to performance ratio for its time, but I don't get so hung up on this point as much as others do because you shouldn't be looking for serious power in a games console anyways. Get a PC, fag. Consoles have always served and will continue to serve to provide entertainment, especially from first-party titles. If you're looking to render videos or do some shit like advanced 3D modeling, just get a fucking PC. God, I hate fags who obsess over console performance...

Now, onto the Wii. The only one of these I've actually owned BTW. I got mine in 2008 after my dad noticed how attached I'd become to his old Sega Genesis. It certainly served a different niche than these other consoles which really makes it hard to compare, like Cap said, but even still, I think the thing's just flat-out better. It's got a really unique controller... er... "remote," but I say it's not that bad. Still better than a DS3 or Switch Joy-Cons BTW. Though, I did practically grow up with a Wii remote in hand, so I'll acknowledge some bias here. Motion controls: love 'em or hate 'em, they're everywhere on this thing. Over the course of its life, they just kept on getting shoehorned into places where they didn't belong, and I'll concede to that. Still, the Wii absolutely MOTION CONTROL MOGS the shit out of the 360's Kinect and whatever the fuck PS Move was. Now, the Wii's killer feature here was really what Nintendo has always been known to do: have amazing first-party games and a low price of entry by not focusing so much on raw hardware specs and not catering to faggy devs who don't know how to optimize they games. Plus the HOME menu, Miis, and the Wii Shop Channel were revolutionary for console design across the industry going forward. One major con was the excessive amounts of shovelware that was available for the platform, but a good solution to this was to just go in-person to the store rather than hunting through the Wii Shop Channel.

IMO, the Wii really served two groups: casual gamers and Nintendo fags. The former was the absolute money maker, like grandmas with Wii Sports or your local gym with a Wii running Just Dance, and the latter, whilst formerly being Nintendo's primary demographic, gradually began to receive less catering to in this generation. As such, the console didn't appeal so much to others who weren't so interested in first-party Nintendo games, but hey, you can't say they really lost here because they weren't really trying to compete to begin with. Nintendo tried to compete back during Xbox vs PS2 vs GameCube and lost, so they kinda just said screw it and cut their losses here. Nintendo's never been the greatest for third-party games, but hey, you could play CoD online on the Wii for $0/year, so there were its moments.

Lastly, looking back, the Wii is an absolute powerhouse for emulation. Hell, the thing doesn't even emulate GameCube games for backwards compatibility, the thing literally has GameCube hardware inside it. While these days, most people don't really use their Xbox 360s anymore and certainly much less so their PS3s, you can do a shitload of stuff with a modded Wii. Mod your games, install mods like Newer Super Mario Bros Wii which are entirely new games, bring back online play, emulate literally any console that came before the Wii, and load your Wii games library off a USB loader. Hell, you can even run your Wii as a web server. Someone now even got Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 running on the Wii with working online multiplayer: Point being, while the Xbox 360 and PS3 (less so) had their time in the spotlight, the Wii burns on like an eternal flame that just refuses to die.[/NintendoFaggotry]

As far as my own preference is concerned, I like the Wii the best because it was the one that I played the most when I was younger and got the most mileage out of it as an emulation/piracy machine years later. The 360 had more of an edge to it when I was still a kid, what with its more mature library and stronger hardware, but most of its library and other appeals aren't really to my tastes, either then or now. There are so many more games that would have me willing to pull out my Wii and play a game on its original hardware than there are 360 (or PS3) games that I can say the same for; granted, you could also play Wii games with the original motion controls via Dolphin w/ Bluetooth or work your way around using them at all if you'd prefer, but the Wii rides and dies strong in its novelties.

The PS3 has a few merits and the more interesting non-Nintendo exclusives imo (thank God you can emulate most of them in the current year) but it lost this one to both the general public and to myself big time. So the 360 is probably the most "objective" winner, but this is also the era where Nintendo went all-in on gimmick consoles/handhelds and had at least one or two money-printing machines on the market at a time. Hard to say they were even competing with the competition either then or now (especially now...)
