Steins;Gate (General)

I'm here to fix that. For the inaugural post in the Steins;Gate thread, I want to talk about my personal views on the game's overall strengths and weaknesses. I want to do this for all the series mainlines (that I've read), but I figured this would be a good place to start since I read S;G first.

This won't be exhaustive or super duper detailed, just some baseline stuff I think the games get right (and wrong).

I have experienced the VN something like four times now. My own playthrough of course, and then watching my brother and two dear friends play. I feel fairly confident in my assessment, but feel free to flame me if you want. Spoilers for the whole game ahead:
Spoiler
First of all, two things that are great in every Science Adventure game: Banging soundtrack and stellar voice work. Takeshi Abo, I fucking kneel. I don't know how you do it every time. I don't know VA names yet but I've never been let down by the voice cast of a SciAdv game. Onto the proper good of S;G:

1) Okabe. My favorite protagonist in the series still, though Takuru and Takumi aren't far behind. Okabe is definitely not as "complex" as someone like Takumi, but I really enjoy his character arc and development throughout the S;G storyline. You can tell that Okabe really is just a kid inside that wants to have fun adventures with his friends, and it's not until the end of chapter 5 that reality comes crashing down and forces him to lock the fuck in. And what a lock-in. Chapter 6 has some of my favorite moments of Okabe in the entire game. It really demonstrates not only his force of will, but his intelligence and willingness to adapt to changing circumstances. His moment with Moeka on the roof and then breaking out of the SERN van are such great moments. Dude's a beast when he needs to be.

Hououin Kyouma, Okabe's alter ego, needs no introduction. Super iconic, so many great one liners. Operation Skuld remains my favorite true ending (more on this later).

2) Chaos;Child remains my GOAT entry but I do think that the S;G core cast (Okabe, Kurisu, Daru, Mayuri, and Suzuha) are probably stronger overall. Daru doesn't shine as much until 0, but the rest of those I mentioned all have great moments and development throughout the story. The revelations about Kurisu and her father, and how that colored her interactions with Okabe (fathercon btw), Mayuri being a lot smarter and more perceptive than she lets on, Suzuha's wish to meet her father again and all of the shit she goes through in Alpha Worldline (past and future), truly an amazing supporting cast that is hard to top. And Daru does still have his moments too, like going to get the pin for Suzuha or the revelation that he pursued the time machine on both attractor fields (to his death on alpha worldline) just to bring Okabe's dream to fruition.

Okabe/Kurisu is also my preferred 'canon' romance of the series. I think they have such great chemistry and the way they come to rely on each other is just excellent.

3) The "nanami hand box" moment in this game is so good. I'll never forget chapter 5's end. It's especially memorable to me because I started reading it right before work, and had to leave on the frame the rounders bust in. I was thinking about that shit for 10 hours straight. And of course, what happens immediately afterward, and Chapter 6 as I already mentioned... such an amazing ride.

4) One of the major pitfalls of the series that Steins;Gate avoids is that it doesn't have an individual main villain. It does have its main minor villains in moeka and tennouji (we'll return to them later), but the actual villains of the narrative are the Committee of 300 (via SERN), and the world itself. Both I think act as forces of nature, insurmountable obstacles that Okabe cannot possibly overcome through conventional means or on his own. It really wouldn't be until YOU KNOW THE ONE that this series got its iconic villain, but I hope the concept of an 'entity' as a villain gets revisited at some point as well.

5) Chapter 9 is such a great chapter. Tennouji really steals the show as the tragic villain. It's a shame this part was massacred in the anime. It's even sadder how his plan doesn't really pan out, since Moeka ends up killing herself if FB stops talking to her on that worldline. Not to mention psycho Nae... Plus, Okabe bringing up Suzuha to Tennouji, and him revealing the truth about her being a time travller... just a mint chapter. I can't say enough good shit about it.

6) For me, the true ending of S;G is undefeated (as far as true endings go). Operation Skuld is such a fantastic moment, a final fulfillment of everything you've worked towards at that point in the game. It's like Okabe himself said: "... It feels right." Saving the one he loves, saving the future, and putting his life on the line one last time to do it... fantastic. Maybe one day I'll talk more about why I love it so much.

7) While the consistency is not always there, the moldy look of S;G art will always be iconic. It's going to be much missed in Re:Boot.

There's more I could say, but I want to actually get this post out so I'll cut it here on positive. Let's talk bad:

1) Weak side characters. I personally feel that everyone outside of the core 5 I mentioned are lacking. Lukako and Moeka in particular (sorry Alix) leave a lot to be desired. This kind of feeds into point 2, which I'll discuss in a moment. The only character here I'm iffy about is Faris, as I think her and Okabe actually have really good chemistry, the only problem is that she's in the game that has Kurisu and Mayuri in it, so she's gonna lose no matter what. Sorry NyanNyan.

2) Weaker later game chapters. I think Chapter 7-8 are the worst parts of S;G for certain. Chapter 7 isn't actually that bad, it's just kind of a sharp drop off from the excellence of the previous chapter. The RaiNet battle scene lingers far too long imo, and I wish it had been cut down or executed in a more entertaining way. Maybe it lands better if you're Japanese, idk. Chapter 8 I think is the real stinker. I get what they're going for with Luka, and I don't hate him or anything, but he just has no stakes compared to basically everyone else in the game. Everyone else is risking their own life or someone they love, but Lukako's out here going through the "accepting himself" arc. It just doesn't land for me like the other chapters, fortunately it's short. Moeka's chapter is carried by the Tennouji subplot, and she is definitely handled better in other series entries (LBP/Darling).

3)Missing CGs. By missing, I mean S;G has moments that really should've been captured visually. My most glaring example is that instead of getting a CG of suzuha fighting the rounders, it's just a picture of her face with some speedlines. I would've killed to actually see this happen. I think some more CGs in Chapter 6 of some of the SERN thugs and encounters Okabe has would've also been great. I think S;G 0 is far more egregious with this problem, but I thought it was worth mentioning anyway. Really, most of the series has this problem-- we need more CGs!

4) I could also bitch about this for most of the games, but the "replay" parts if you miss the true ending the first time aren't pleasant. Nowhere near as bad as, say, Chaos;Head or Chaos;Child, but the text messages can be confusing and I've known people who had problems getting everything to work, and there's not really a way to figure out what you fucked up.

Like I said, I wanted to get this post out before the end of time so this isn't exhaustive or all that detailed. What do you think? Amirite? Amiwrong? Is this coal, gem? What do YOU think about Steins;Bait?

For those a bit confused, don't worry, this isn't me skipping over the rest of C;HN to rush immediately into S;G, to reiterate the plan I layed out in my After Action Report of C;HN's Common Route, "Silent Sky".
What I have in mind is that, I'll start going through Steins;Gate and the rest of Chaos;Head Noah's routes, switching between reporting on the two on a weekly basis, one week will be stuff on S;G, and the other will be stuff on whatever C;HN route I'm doing
This is me putting that plan into action!

For this week, I'll be reporting on Steins;Gate! Next week, will be the first reports on Chaos;Head NoAH's Ending B route, "Crying Sky".

With that disclosure out of the way.

Commencing Report No. 1 on Steins;Gate Prologue and Chapter 1!
Spoiler
I find it a bit surreal going through the Prologue and Chapter 1 seeing the stuff the Anime cut out.

One thing that immediately stands out, as I noted in the MChat yesterday, is just how different the performance of the cast is in comparison to the Anime and just later voiced Steins;Gate spinoff material. It was a bit jarring at first given how used I am to their anime performances, but I think I've gotten fairly comfortable with them now that I'm done with Chapter 1.

That said, with Daru and Okabe is where I really noticed this the most, Daru isn't as... I don't know if Nasal is the way to describe the later performances of Daru but that's what comes to mind, and was the one that caught me most off guard to hear at first. Okabe was also a surprise to hear, his voice is so much more lighter than in the anime, but even then there are moments where you can very much tell that its still the same voice actor across both versions.

There's also Mayuri's voicework, its interesting to hear how grounded Mayuri's voice feels compared to the Anime, Mayuri here sounds a lot more relaxed compared to the very expressive and bubbly anime performance. While at first glance Kana Hanazawa's performance here and in the anime feel mostly similar, but when you like really listen in and you can start to see where the performances diverge, its really cool.

What I'm more surprised by though is the voices that didn't sound all too different, like Faris later on. Haruko Momoi had her shit on lock from the beginning, its insane.

Another thing that caught me off guard is how staggeringly different the characters are, they're not entirely huge changes from what I can see so far, and especially with how much the anime had to skim off a lot of the parts it couldn't cover in the VN its naturally going to be like this.

Everyone feels a bit more meaner than the anime, I don't know what it is specifically but I think the fact that we see what Okabe's thinking and we see a lot more of how everyone generally deals with Kyouma makes everyone feel like they have a bit more teeth to them. Which, I don't know how to feel about it right now but what I can say is that it makes everyone feel a bit more real.

I actually don't have much to say in regards to the Prologue, or Chapter 1 directly, other than, they are verry strong starts to the story. Getting a good look at the Time Machine before its fired off like the Chekov's Railgun it is, is nice.

As well, the immediate and clear call backs to Chaos;Head (hell, the cover of the game is literally right there in one of the Raido Kaikan backgrounds in like, the first few minutes of the VN), and the mention of the Gero Froggies here in the prologue and later on Chapter 1 when they name drop my man, my goat, man of the hour (and of the millennium), Takumi "Lightning-Fast Neidhardt" Nishijou (Delusionary) himself, in the middle of Chapter 1. It makes me so happy that I played at least Silent Sky before starting this.

Small tangent but I find it really funny that after the events of I bet the True End of C;HN, Takumi is like, still fucking posting on @chan a year later. He's 19 by 2010, I don't know if he has any colleges in mind or if he even has college on the mind at all but, like, its still really fucking funny to know and think of that, God bless him.

Another thing I wanna talk about, the Phone, I fucking love the Phone. It is such a cool way to interact with the story directly, being able to pull it out at any time, having to actually send messages myself, its just, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I wanna gush about it more but I don't have anything more to say other than its so fucking cool. The fact that I can even customize the backgrounds, ringtones, and just casually check messages or check my contacts its just, mwah chef's fucking kiss man.

As I said before, everyone (especially Okabe) feels a lot more mean but at the same time real, compared to the Anime. Everyone here seems to have a much easier time fishing Okabe out of Kyouma, and I think that's a very neat little detail that sets-up how Okabe feels about his Kyouma persona.

Also, one thing I was very happy (and mortified) with seeing was Kurisu's verbal and intellectual beat down on Okabe at her conference. It not only acted as a very good way to introduce us to important concepts to keep note of later on in the story, but its also nice way to set-up Kurisu's character as we'll see her later on.

I'd also like to mention Ruka, not for any particular reason I'm just happy to see him as well, though, the first moments with him are also where my point about everyone (and in this case, specifically Okabe) feel a lot meaner. Ruka himself isn't very mean, in fact as it stands it seems like he's pretty much the same as he is in the Anime, but Okabe feels a lot more free to give Ruka, and everyone else, a bit more slack.

Just to make it clear I'm emphasizing the fact that everyone feels a bit mean not as any derision, but just an observation. As I said earlier, this makes everyone feel a bit more real, like people, and most importantly, like friends, because yeah. I think we've all given whatever buddies we have a bit of slack, its only natural. Iron sharpens Iron and all that.

Not much to note on Suzuha and Yuugo-Braun's character introductions, though, for Yuugo in particular, its actually nice to see him not be as heavy handed with Okabe as he is with him in the Anime.

Now, for Moeka, I won't note much on the actual introduction itself, other than this wonderful moment
qw001.png
qw001.png (2.18 MiB) Viewed 37 times
but what I will note is the stark contrast between her irl demeanor and her demeanor over text and mail. I never got to see this stark difference as much in the Anime, but now that I have a direct peek at Okabe's phone, its really interesting how much more lively and comfortable Moeka is over text.

Moeka is the first character I took interest in when I started the S;G Anime, and its really cool to see her full depth here in the VN. Honestly, its really sad she isn't shown much in the S;G Anime aside from where she counts, but even then that was enough for me to get really attached and biased to her character. I like Moeka a lot, I like her a whole lot.

Faris, not much to say on Faris right now other than what I've said about her VAs performance. It is interesting to hear how Okabe genuinely has trouble keeping up with Faris', for lack of a better term as of the moment of writing, "larp".

I think that's all I have to say for now, very nice to see where the deviations are, an on top of all that, to see how much more depth the characters are allowed here compared to the Anime. Safe to say I think the story has me hooked and I'm excited to see how things will turn out in later chapters.

With that out of the way, I will reiterate that this week will be Steins;Gate week and next week I'll be doing reports on C;HN, however. That could change given some real life circumstances and that may be delayed, but whatever happens I will find a way to circumvent any meddling from the Organization and get my reports out in a timely/complete manner, now then, with that out of the way.
This marks the first post on the Steins;Gate (General) Thread!

I’m glad some one else noticed the change in Daru’s voice. I feel like it was never the same after the original VN. I think he honestly sounds a little more retarded going forward lol, especially in 0.

You can actually use the phone at certain times to call people and get different scenes than normal. The game doesn’t really tell you this but it is a feature.

So far you’ve picked the dark horse characters in both games. I wonder if you will ever like a main heroine the most…

Looking forward to more from you

Now, for Moeka, I won't note much on the actual introduction itself, other than this wonderful moment

but what I will note is the stark contrast between her irl demeanor and her demeanor over text and mail.

See ya next worldline!

I forgot to mention this but I managed to get Faris to send me a picture of FES so the game is basically perfect and free to send me to the credits at any time.
