Introduce Yourself

For discussion of everything else. Because a forum wouldn't be complete without its very own designated landfill, would it?

Introduce Yourself

Post by Maypews »

Since most forums seem to have a thread like this I guess I should make one for this place too. Some prompts;
What makes SciADV special to you and what's your favourite entry?
What's are your favourite pieces of non-SciADV otaku media? (can be other visual novels, anime, manga, jrpgs, etc.)
How'd you find this forum?
What's your opinion on cyberspace as it is now?
What are some of your foremost hobbies?

What makes SciADV special to you and what's your favourite entry?
Steins;Gate, when I read it immediately felt like something that was made specifically for me. I'm a sucker for hard sci-fi and conspiracy plots, and consider that I've been a latent chuunibyou for the majority of my life (Since at least 4th grade and not much since then, however reading S;G and soon after entering into University seemed to be the correct conditions for it to return with a vengeance). I was immediately drawn in, and am proud to say that I loved every second of it.

Chaos;Head is also very good, and what surprised me the most about it was how it captured an exact atmosphere which I had imagined in the back of my mind for a very long time. The way I've described it to people is the feeling you get when you wind up on a shady website and think to yourself "I shouldn't be here", but your curiosity drags you further. I have not finished Chaos;Head yet, but I am kicking myself to get it done.
What's are your favourite pieces of non-SciADV otaku media? (can be other visual novels, anime, manga, jrpgs, etc.)
For games I think the Metal Gear Solid series, Deus Ex and Killer7 are straight up some of the coolest games ever made. Again, like I said-- I'm a sucker for conspiracy plots. I'm not actually much of a VN guy and haven't read many of them. I used to like looking for cheap anime OVAs to stream on a smoky night, but I've been a bit too busy to watch much anime lately.
How'd you find this forum?
I saw a button and thought "Hey, I know what that is!". Actually, I might have interacted briefly with the admin of this site before, although through a platform that I seldom open and only lurk in nowadays.
What's your opinion on cyberspace as it is now?
I think it's pretty rad! I've made a lot of online pals and good connections over the past few years, and I have the everlasting spring of niche online communities to thank for it. Most of the internet pessimism that you hear lately I think mostly comes from people who won't put in the effort to seek or carve out a place for themselves somewhere.
What are some of your foremost hobbies?
I've self-taught myself computer programming since my late teens, although I don't enjoy it as a pasttime in itself as much anymore: I like making real, useful things and seeing them work. Recently I've become interested in Amateur Radio and have begun an effort to assemble a Lab of sorts of my own. I am a Physics and Compsci undergrad and consider screwing around to by my job and studying my hobby. I also got into Backgammon a while ago, great game!

Wow, awesome intro and welcome to the site! Yeah I've long thought that one of the biggest appeals of SciADV is just how relatable it feels, your description of it feeling like it was made for me is exactly how I initially felt too. It does an incredible job of curating a very specific atmosphere that strikes a chord with a very specific audience. What sort of lab are you working towards? :Surprised:

Basically just a club at my university, but also partly an experiment in itself of how my ideas of running something like that could work: there are Physics and Compsci clubs here, and they're fine, but they don't get up to as much as I'd hoped: going about it with an ethos of tearing down red tape can get more done quickly, and I think doing fun things should be spontaneous, they shouldn't require weeks of planning in advance and a stamp by a committee. The kind of people I want to seek out are other hackers and nerds who'd be down to fuck shit up in a good way, so I want to give everyone as much freedom as possible. Ultimately the only way you can verify your ideas about the world is to see them through yourself, so that's a big part of it. It will be called the Amateur Radio Lab.

Yeah agreed about bureaucracy killing the mood, certainly takes you out of it when you have to jump through 20 hoops just to get started. The mention of hackers reminded me of a hacking group's website that I came across recently-ish, good stuff. Good luck with the ARL!

Ah yeah, you know, there's this great doc that goes into what those guys were all about back then, the kind of flak they dealt with, what their ethos was, and they're really all just a bunch of punks, right? and it's about as punk as you can possibly get; they interviewed Phiber Optik right before he got sent to jail. When you look at the part with the L0pht, (which has a few of the cDc right there btw,) you get to see this place that they're hanging out in. And this is where the story goes full circle as I'm thinking to myself, and I've thought this for a long time, that this is the kind of spirit that I've embraced and want to do my part for.

Yeah the DIY ethos is really great, in a way you sort of see this manifest in the whole Neocities/small web crowd too. But it definitely applies to those hackers probably much moreso; very reminiscent of true punk rock bands where they had to make a lot out of very little relatively, in that respect something like Unwound comes to mind. I'm definitely going to sit down and give that documentary a proper watch, thank you so much for sharing it!

What makes SciADV special to you and what's your favourite entry?
I think what makes SciADV special, at least to me, is the social commentary and the characters. The fact that back in 2008, with Chaos;Head, they were able to predict so much of what is happening today is mind-blowing, and I don’t regret taking that recommendation. I love every dynamic between the different characters, like the Robotics Notes Club or the Future Gadget Lab. They remind me so much of my own friendships, and I love that.

As for my favorite entry, it’s gotta be Chaos;Child. The fact that I spent countless hours reading a visual novel back to back should speak volumes about its quality. It also holds the distinction of being the second piece of media that made me cry. C;C is definitely one of my favorite works of fiction.

If we’re talking about manga, it’s Ashita no Joe. It’s easily one of the best manga ever produced. I also really like Trigun Maximum, Berserk, Hokuto no Ken, Yotsuba&!, and City.

As for anime, I go with the old reliables: Haruhi, Cowboy Bebop, Gundam, Hidamari Sketch, Otaku no Video, FLCL, and Haibane Renmei.

When it comes to video games, I’m much simpler: TF2 and Yume Nikki. Maybe I’ll play some SMT, Persona, or one of Suda51’s games. But I’m not as much of a gamer as I used to be. :Sorry:
How'd you find this forum?
Someone I’ve known for a long time recommended this forum, and I thought, why not? And here I am.
What's your opinion on cyberspace as it is now?
Honestly, it's great! Most of the people here are very chill and they just want to talk about their hobbies. Best niche website ever.
What are some of your foremost hobbies?
Music. I like playing the piano, or at least trying to. But what I really love is singing. I can’t spend a day without singing at least one or two songs.

Welcome to the forum, lovely introduction! Very much agree regarding the character dynamics; a desire to capture that sort of friend group feel present among the cast in the entries is no small part in why I made this very website. Also, love to see other Joebrothers around here. I'm an animefag who's never read the manga but the 2nd season is absolutely awe-inspiring.

This is one of the greatest scenes in anime history IMO, alongside the ending of course.
